Christ and Politics, Week 5
Day 2: The Gospel in the Marriage Covenant
Devotional
Marriage is more than a contract and more than romance. It is a living picture of the gospel.
Paul makes the connection plain in Ephesians 5. A husband and wife are meant to display the covenant love between Christ and His church. A husband who lays down his life for his wife shows Jesus laying down His life for us. A wife who trusts and honors her husband shows the church trusting Christ.
So when we talk about marriage, we are not talking about a mere social institution. We are talking about a picture God painted into creation to point sinners to redemption. That is what is at stake. Every faithful marriage is a sermon without words.
Distort the picture and you change more than a definition. You blur the message. And a world that desperately needs the gospel loses one of God’s clearest illustrations of His love. That is not a small thing.
This gives you holy purpose. Your marriage, or your commitment to God’s design for marriage, is not merely personal. It is a witness. It declares that God’s love is real, that He keeps covenant, and that He transforms sinners.
So take heart and get to work. You are part of something far bigger than you.
Bible Verse
“‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” — Ephesians 5:31–32 (ESV)
Reflection Question
How does understanding marriage as a picture of the gospel change the way you think about defending or living out God’s design?
Quote
“Marriage has always been about God’s redemption of man.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving Your church with a covenant love that never fails. Make that love visible in how we live, in our homes, and in how we speak about marriage. Amen.
