The Apostle Paul has explained the righteousness of God from Romans chapter 1 to chapter 5. And entering chapter 6, he mentions the “baptism” that Jesus received from John. There is a clear reason for this. When he proclaimed at the end of chapter 5, “But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more” (Romans 5:20), some people misunderstood, saying, “If so, doesn’t the grace of God become more abundant the more a person commits sin?” The Apostle Paul sternly refutes such misunderstanding at the very beginning of chapter 6. “Certainly not.” The core here is the expression “we who died to sin.” The Apostle Paul declares toward the people who are in Christ, “You are those who died to your sins.” This is not a word to arouse moral determination or exertion of will. It was to make them believe the ministry of salvation that has already occurred in Jesus Christ.
