  • Leading Through Uncertainty: Building Healthy, Resilient Nonprofits
    2026/07/14

    Summary:

What does effective nonprofit leadership look like in today's uncertain political and economic climate? In this episode of the Cause Leadership Podcast, host Dave Hutchinson speaks with Dan Murray, President and CEO of Opportunity International Canada, about leading a thriving charitable organization while navigating economic uncertainty, global challenges, and donor priorities.

Dan shares why international development continues to be essential in communities experiencing extreme poverty and explains how Canadian donors can make an outsized impact through microfinance, entrepreneurship, business training, and practical financial tools that help families build sustainable incomes and lasting economic independence.

The conversation also explores the key ingredients of organizational health and charity leadership. Dan discusses why humility, empowered leadership teams, strong organizational systems, and cross-department collaboration are critical to long-term success. He offers practical strategies for leading remote and hybrid teams, emphasizing the importance of intentional communication, relationship-building, and regular in-person connection.

Dave and Dan also examine several of the most pressing leadership issues facing nonprofits today, including board governance, CEO succession planning, staff retention, burnout prevention, and creating workplace cultures where people can do meaningful work while finding joy and sustainability in their roles.
