Camped in the shadow of Alpamayo itself after a day defined by caterpillars scattered across the trail (inchworms and fuzzy black-and-red ones both), a long circular valley walk, and a summit made intense by fierce wind and loose, slate-like scree. The night ends with a chaotic, mid-dark tent turnaround after realizing they'd pitched it on a slope.
