Carl Rogers and Motivational Interviewing

Glenn Hinds and Sebastian Kaplan welcome Dr Christopher C. Wagner to explore Carl Rogers, person-centred helping and the development of Motivational Interviewing. Rogers’ work provides an important foundation for understanding the relational qualities that continue to shape MI practice.

The discussion considers Rogers’ radical departure from an expert model of helping. Rather than positioning the practitioner as the person who diagnoses the problem and supplies the answer, person-centred practice emphasises understanding the client’s experience and creating conditions that support growth and change. These ideas can be seen in the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing, particularly acceptance and partnership.

Chris explores Rogers’ core conditions, incongruence, acceptance, growth and emotional emancipation. The conversation also considers where Motivational Interviewing builds on its person-centred foundations by intentionally attending to language, direction and conversations about change. Chris is an associate professor, licensed clinical psychologist, and certified rehabilitation counselor. His scholarship focuses on motivational interviewing (MI) and interpersonal processes in mental health/substance abuse treatment. He has focused on expanding MI theory and practice to a broader focus than originally conceived as well as developing MI group psychotherapy. He is the lead author on the MI in Groups book that is part of the official Guilford Press series on MI. His practice and training has included outpatient, inpatient and residential treatment of individuals and groups with a variety of health, mental health and addiction problems.
