Candorland is a podcast with three purposes:

  1. Demonstrate Candor. Our society (both on social media and in real life) has devalued honesty, integrity, empathy, and facts. Arguing hurts us all, and it has harmed our society as we've drifted into a world where open communication is met with open hostility. Conversation rooted in candor, vulnerability, and humor is valuable to society, so we're doing it here and hope it catches on.

  2. Offer Comfort. Candorland aims to give you an entertaining break from all the stuff that worries you. Two people (and occasional guests) share their thoughts and feelings around mostly mundane topics. These thoughts lead to deeper conversations that always come back to the idea that we can disagree and still care about one another. It's ok to be wrong about things you think or believe, and we show that in our fact-checking "F-Bomb" at the end of every episode.

  3. Foster Creativity. Art and creativity are fundamental to happiness. Down time recharges our batteries and helps us process information. Candorland is part of Chris and Jason's wellbeing. We won't be breaking our backs to fit algorithms, meet tight deadlines, or engage in a system that extracts our humanity and gives us crumbs in return. We will be engaging in new artistic expressions and creative processes, sharing what we learn along the way.

This podcast is an important part of our lives. It's been something that has brought Chris and I (Jason) closer and helped us understand one another better. I've grown as a human being because of this podcast. Candor is open and honest communication, and feeling grief is a real part of our lives that we're willing to be open and honest about. I believe it helps to know other people understand you, so our intention is to help make the world a better place by sharing our feelings in the open. If you're open to hearing it, we're going to share some very real and honest stuff in this episode that deals with grief and love. We hope it helps you now or in the future.

You'll notice that Episode 12 of Candorland feels different. The conversation is a bit less "naturally enthusiastic", there's a performative vibe at times, and compared to Episode 11, the laughs are definitely fewer and farther between. We're betting that you understand the deep exhaustion that can occur when you've gone past your exit and keep going (like we did to record and produce this episode and maintain our weekly schedule). That said, you're a part of our community, and our community is important to us. Showing up for you is something we take seriously. Not as seriously as replacing all the actors in a film (except one) with puppets, but almost.

This episode contains serious insights and humor. At the end of every episode, Chris and Jason correct the record in the fact-checking "F-Bomb" segment.

In Episode 11 of Candorland, the Stephens family garden is home to a nest of yellowjackets, which leads to talk of "insect sting videos", which leads to candor around how people feel pain differently. Jason's t-shirt idea spawns a chat about the French Revolution, which brings us to candor about how the stresses of our world are harming us, which ends with a family beef.
