Can a mental health chatbot actually improve postpartum depression and anxiety? This episode examines the Woebot randomized trial and clarifies why a program can be acceptable without demonstrating a reliable treatment benefit. We explore three questions: What does a small depression effect estimate mean? How much can favorable satisfaction ratings tell us about therapeutic value? And does including participants from different backgrounds establish that an intervention reduces mental-health inequities? The study recruited English-speaking participants aged sixteen and older during the first three postpartum months through the PowerMom research platform. Its most important limitation is the combination of a limited efficacy sample and a waitlist comparison, which cannot isolate the program's specific therapeutic ingredients. The episode also examines an earlier postpartum Woebot trial, a broader meta-analysis of digital interventions, and the distinction between automated support and clinician-supported online treatment. We unpack why respondent satisfaction, symptom improvement, and benefits for the parent–infant relationship require different evidence. Finally, we address the timing: this research appeared after the Woebot app's retirement. What remains scientifically valuable when a promising support tool has not yet demonstrated the clinical benefits its name might suggest?
