Can family empowerment reduce the stigma parents of autistic children experience? This episode examines what researchers measure when they study parental confidence, support networks, and the experience of stigma. We begin with a Shanghai interview study involving 15 caregivers of autistic children aged six to fourteen. We cover three questions: how public judgment becomes internalized shame; what changed in the British SOLACE program and a Greek family psychoeducation pilot; and why empowerment, professional connections, and access to services are distinct outcomes. The intervention studies reported encouraging changes in parents' experiences, while the American Mind the Gap trial found improvements in professional networks and service-related empowerment without a corresponding difference in measured service access. The central limitation is causal: the Shanghai interviews explored experiences rather than testing whether an empowerment program reduced stigma. The linked Clifford–Howarth article was inaccessible in full, so this episode evaluates its headline against accessible primary research rather than reconstructing its argument. When a family is described as more empowered, whose experience changed — and what became possible?
