Sacrifice and waste: This is the process and result of our voracious economic system, whose bottomless appetite now threatens the biosphere's capacity to support life. But the existential crisis facing us all has long been felt by the world's most vulnerable communities. This is explored beautifully in the film Athenian Material by Laure Vermeersch, a French filmmaker who spent five years documenting the impacts of Athens' huge landfill on local communities. Forced to live in the stench or even pick through the waste to survive, the stark powerlessness of these relatively poor communities is evidenced by authority's unwillingness to close the site—across the political spectrum. Laure and host Rachel Donald explore the globality of this community's struggles in this conversation, highlighting the challenge of mythic proportions we all face today, and the criticality of story-telling in zones where all we have left are our bodies and our voices. Athenian Material is the opening film of the 7th BCK Film Symposium which takes place in Athens from the 24th to the 27th of October 2024.
