In John 8:21–30 Jesus gives a strong warning about the danger of unbelief. Our sins make us guilty before God, but the sin of unbelief keeps us guilty. Jesus makes it clear that unless we believe in Him, we will die in our sins. But the good news is that anyone who repents of sin and turns to Jesus in faith will be forgiven, have eternal life, and no longer walk in darkness, but have the light of life. And those whose faith is in Christ are reminded that true faith shows itself in a life shaped by God’s Word, lived for His glory, and pointing others to Jesus.

This week's sermon, "If Anyone Thirsts" from John 7:37–52, explores Jesus's bold invitation on the last day of the Feast of Booths, calling anyone whose soul thirsts, for forgiveness, peace, or purpose, to come and find satisfaction in Him alone. He promises that all who believe will receive the Holy Spirit, with "rivers of living water" flowing from their lives in love for God and others. Yet even as Jesus speaks with unmatched authority, the crowd remains divided, a reminder that belief in Christ is still where every soul must turn.

In this sermon, "Where I Am," from John 7:25–36, we see the crowds in Jerusalem divided over who Jesus really is. Some suspecting He might be the Messiah, others dismissing Him based on mistaken assumptions about His origins. Jesus boldly proclaims His mission from the Father, warning that those who reject Him will not be able to follow where He is going. This passage reminds us that Jesus's boldness can be ours too, as we trust in God's sovereign work to draw people to faith even as we're called to share the Gospel.

Jesus' opponents in John 7 don't really challenge what He taught, they challenge His right to teach it at all. Where'd He get His learning? Who trained Him? Last Sunday we looked at how Jesus answered that challenge, not by defending Himself, but by pointing to the Father who sent Him and exposing the unbelief underneath their questions. It's a good passage to ask ourselves: are we weighing the substance of what Jesus says, or just sizing Him up by the wrong measure?
