When a person becomes withdrawn, sleepy, irritable, confused, emotionally flat, or unusually disinhibited, it is easy to interpret the behaviour as a personality issue, poor motivation, or non-compliance.
But could the medication be contributing?
In this episode of RIOT, we explore how anti-anxiety medications can affect behaviour. We look at the intended benefits, such as reduced distress and improved emotional regulation, but also the less obvious effects: sedation, cognitive slowing, reduced initiation, emotional blunting, memory difficulties, paradoxical agitation, and withdrawal-related changes.
The central message is simple: before we label a person’s behaviour, we need to understand what may be influencing it.
Because the behaviour we see may not tell the whole story.
