Cal is primed for a showdown against Wagner this Saturday, despite Wagner’s brutal 87-3 loss to James Madison last week. Head coach Tosh Lupoi insists every team gets equal respect, focusing instead on Wagner’s defensive pressure and tackles for loss. Cal, coming off a win over Syracuse after a loss to UCLA, is 1-1 this season and heavily favored against the FCS opponent. The matchup pits first-year Cal coach Lupoi against veteran Wagner head coach Tom Masella, whose decades of experience earn Lupoi’s deep respect. Lupoi made it clear that last week’s score means nothing—preparation must be based on Wagner’s current strengths, not past results. Defensive coordinator Michael Hutchings echoed the message: every opponent deserves focus, and Cal’s goal is to execute flawlessly on Saturday.

Cal’s bowl hopes are hanging by a thread after two shaky games—down to five of eight experts still predicting a postseason berth. With six wins needed for bowl eligibility, the team’s early struggles have fans and analysts divided. The Poinsettia Bowl is the only matchup mentioned by multiple sites, but even that’s uncertain. As Pac-12 realignment looms, Cal’s path to a bowl remains in their hands—with plenty of games left to turn things around and silence the doubters.

Their next matchup against Wagner won’t change much unless they lose, which could seriously derail postseason dreams.
