CHRISTOPHER LIAM ROSE TALKS ABOUT #CLRT - THE TEACHER IS THE TAUGHT (CLRTTTITT)
“The Teacher Is the Taught”
“The teacher is the taught” is a profound spiritual and philosophical idea, strongly associated with Jiddu Krishnamurti. It means that when we teach or guide another person, we are simultaneously learning through the experience ourselves.
Rather than seeing the relationship as:
Teacher → teaches → studentit becomes:
Teacher ↔ LearnerBoth people are participating in the same process of discovery.
1. The Teacher Learns From the Student
When you teach someone, their questions, experiences, difficulties and perspectives can reveal things about yourself that you may not have noticed.
For example, a person may ask you:
“Why am I afraid of change?”
As you explore the question with them, you may recognise your own relationship with fear and change.
Therefore, the person you are teaching becomes your teacher.
2. Teaching Is Not Simply Giving Knowledge
The phrase challenges the traditional idea that the teacher possesses all the knowledge while the student knows nothing.
Instead, both can observe, question, explore and discover together.
The teacher does not necessarily say:
“I know the truth, and I will give it to you.”Instead:
“Let us investigate this together.”3. The Teacher Must Also Observe Themselves
A genuine teacher continually observes their own:
- Thoughts
- Emotions
- Beliefs
- Assumptions
- Reactions
- Judgements
- Fears
- Attachments
- Behaviour
The teaching relationship therefore becomes an opportunity for self-knowledge.
4. The Student Reflects the Teacher
Sometimes another person's behaviour can act like a mirror.
If you become frustrated because someone is not listening, you can ask:
“Why am I reacting this way?”
The situation can reveal something about your own expectations, attachment or assumptions.
Thus, the student can help the teacher understand themselves.
5. There Is No Psychological Separation
At a deeper level, “the teacher is the taught” points toward the possibility of learning without psychological authority.
There can still be differences in experience, knowledge and responsibility, but neither person needs to create an identity of:
“I am the one who knows, and you are the one who doesn't.”
Instead, there is shared observation and inquiry.
6. Connection With “Know Thyself”
The principle can be understood as:
Teaching others becomes a pathway to knowing yourself.
When you help someone explore compassion, fear, anger, attachment, suffering, freedom or awareness, you are also invited to examine those things within yourself.
7. Connection With Spiritual Silence
From a Spiritual Silence perspective, the teacher and student can become quiet together and observe what is actually happening without immediately imposing beliefs or conclusions.
Silence allows:
Observation → Awareness → Inquiry → Understanding → Learning
The teacher is not merely transferring information; both people are discovering through awareness.
Simple Meaning
“The teacher is the taught” means that teaching and learning are not separate processes. In genuinely shared inquiry, the teacher learns from the student, the student learns from the teacher, and both can discover deeper understanding through observing themselves and each other. In one sentence:
When you teach another person, remain humble enough to recognise that the person you are teaching may also be teaching you.
