Health plan leaders keep repeating the same handful of things about AI, and most of them do not survive contact with an actual deployment. Donna Reed, Chief Growth Officer at healthplans.ai, and Joseph Ancil, Chief AI Officer at healthplans.ai, take seven of them apart and say what to do instead.

The myths, in order:

"Our environment is different." Around 90% of payer workflows, enrollment, prior auth, claims and member service, are doing the same job. Policy and regulation differ at the margins, and the margins are handleable.

"AI will replace people." Tasks get replaced, jobs do not. A nurse spending 45 minutes finding four or five sentences in a chart is a task, not a job.

"Our data is not clean enough to start." Waiting for perfect data is an expensive excuse. AI does not need pristine data to deliver value, and your competitors have already stopped waiting.

"AI is just a smarter search engine." Search retrieves a document. AI reads it, interprets it, translates it and acts on it.

"AI is only for the big national plans." It is flipped. Flatter, faster, less hierarchical plans deploy without the red tape. Size is now a liability.

"AI in healthcare is too risky." Real risk is PHI handling, model behavior, adverse decisions and bias, plus a state patchwork that includes Colorado's algorithm rules and the NAIC AI model bulletin. That needs governance with named owners, not avoidance.

"AI is just hype, we tried it and it did not work." Nine times out of ten the missing step was starting small. Take one workflow, prove it, govern it, then evolve.
