In the third and final episode of Building Capacity: Past, Present and Future, Dr Leila Ellis of the Trainee Research Network is joined by Dr Nick Brown, Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Disease in Childhood, to explore critical appraisal, peer review and the publication process. Nick and Leila take an enthusiastic look behind the publication process: how we decide whether research is trustworthy and clinically useful, how we turn a completed project into a clear manuscript, what happens after submission and how research integrity and artificial intelligence are changing scientific publishing. Listen in for the conclusion to our three-part series, where we have explored how trainees can become involved in research, the different pathways through which they can contribute, and the skills needed to understand and produce clinically meaningful evidence. Dr Leila Ellis is a member of the RCPCH Trainee Research Network and the Severn Paediatric Audit, Research and Quality Improvement Network. She is currently undertaking a Wellcome-funded PhD at the University of Bristol. Dr Nick Brown is Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Disease in Childhood, a clinical paediatrician and epidemiologist with longstanding experience in international child health research. He is affiliated with Uppsala University and has extensive experience of research methodology, academic publishing and postgraduate research supervision.  Explore the resources mentioned in this episode: ADC flipbooks - https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/resources/journals/ADC-flipbooks - RCPCH members can login to access the digital 'flipbook' version of all Archives of Disease in Childhood editions since its launch in October 2023RCPCH Learning: Peer-review training series   – https://learning.rcpch.ac.uk/peer-review-training/ - find Nick's peer-review training video series, which provides practical advice on manuscript preparation, peer review and publishing successRCPCH Learning: 'How to Get Published' seminar – https://learning.rcpch.ac.uk/courses/trainee-research-network-education-seminars-trees-how-to-get-published-may-2025/ - Nick's 2025 seminar 'How to Get Published' offers an introduction to the publication process, covering key steps and common pitfallsADC podcast – https://adcbmj.podbean.com/ - listen to ADC's podcast which covers the editor's highlights of each issue, detailed coverage of specific articles and insightful interviews with authors and specialists in the field The views, thoughts and opinions expressed in this podcast relates only to the speakers and not necessarily to their employers, organisations, RCPCH or any other group or individual.
