Someone you care about opens up about feeling dismissed, taken for granted, or treated unfairly and you genuinely empathize. Then you realize they are describing almost exactly what you have been experiencing with them. That moment can feel like mental whiplash, and I finally found the right word for it: dissonance.
I talk through why this kind of emotional dissonance is so uniquely exhausting, especially when the conflict is not about whether the behavior is hurtful. We already agree it hurts because they explained it perfectly. The real rupture is whether my experience “counts” the same way theirs does, and how fast the conversation flips from impact to intent the second I name my side.
We also dig into the pattern of overexplaining. If you are good with language, you can end up building a whole Canva presentation for your pain, rehearsing the perfect wording, adding disclaimers, and trying to finally get that one sentence: “I see you.” I share the shift I am practicing now, separating a reasonable desire for acknowledgment from the dangerous habit of outsourcing self-trust.
Finally, I turn the lens inward. Recognizing pain when it happens to us is one skill. Recognizing the pain we cause takes curiosity, humility, and the willingness to question our self-image. If “intent vs impact” keeps showing up in your relationships, this conversation will give you language, clarity, and a next step. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the line that hit you hardest.
