Who are the people we consider our own — and who gets left outside our circle of concern?

In Episode 110 of Brother from Another Father, I reflect on a moving encounter from Sebastian Junger’s book Tribe: a struggling stranger who gives away his lunch to a young hitchhiker, despite having very little himself. What makes someone feel responsible for the well-being of a person they have never met?

Our readings challenge us to widen our circle of concern beyond family, friends and those who are like us. Jesus takes this even further, teaching us that our neighbour is anyone in need whom we encounter along our way.

Perhaps the key is learning to recognise Christ in the poor, the refugee, the foreigner, the prisoner and the outcast — those whom society so often leaves on the margins.

The question is not simply who belongs to our tribe, but whether we are willing to make room for someone new.

God bless and have a good Sunday.

  • Ep 109 - Give to God What Is God’s

Can we live faithfully as Christians in a corrupt society without becoming part of the problem?

In Episode 109 of Brother from Another Father, I reflect on Jesus’ famous words: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.” Beginning with the difficult question of paying taxes within a corrupt system, we explore what it means to remain faithful to God when the world around us operates by very different values.

But Jesus’ response goes deeper than taxes. It challenges us to examine the ways we participate in idolatry — giving our loyalty, attention and admiration to money, political power, consumerism and the images that dominate our culture.

As Christians, we are called to resist the temptation to worship anything other than God and to live in a way that draws others towards Him.

The question is not simply what we owe Caesar, but this: What belongs to God in our lives, and are we truly giving it to Him?

God bless and have a good week.

  • Ep 108 - God Is an acquired taste

Why do we sometimes say no to an invitation from God, only to say yes to the things the world offers us?

In Episode 108 of Brother from Another Father, I explore Jesus’ parable of the wedding banquet and the surprising reason we sometimes turn down God’s invitation. Perhaps God, like coffee or wine, is an acquired taste. We need to spend time in prayer, Scripture and the Eucharist before we can truly appreciate the sweetness of God’s presence.

But this invitation goes beyond prayer and worship. Sometimes God invites us to do the difficult things: heal a relationship, reach out to someone we have hurt, or take the first step towards reconciliation.

The paradox is that when we think we are protecting our freedom by saying no to God, we may actually be limiting it.

What would it mean to become truly desperate for God — to hunger for His presence so deeply that, when He invites us to the banquet, our answer is an enthusiastic yes?

God bless and have a good week.

  • Ep 107 — Get Out of the Rat Race

Are we really called to be the best?

In Episode 107 of Brother from Another Father, I reflect on Jesus’ parable of the tenants and the deeper story of Israel’s vocation to be a light to the nations.

Israel was not called to compete with the other nations for power, glory and prestige. And neither are we. Whether we are teachers, doctors, accountants, priests or anything else, our calling is not to win the rat race or become the best version of someone else. It is to become the person God is calling us to be.

I also reflect on the Church’s own history and the temptation to imitate the world’s ways of exercising power and prestige. What might it mean for the Church to rediscover Jesus’ vision of servant leadership — where the greatest are those who serve, and where the vulnerable and marginalised are given a voice?

Perhaps getting out of the rat race is not about doing less, but about remembering who we are doing it for.

God bless and have a good week.

  • Ep 106 - Empty Enough for Grace?
    2026/09/26

What does it mean to be “empty” enough to receive God’s grace?

In Episode 106 of Brother from Another Father, I return to last week’s McDonald’s analogy to explore Jesus’ parable of the two sons and the surprising people who were entering the Kingdom of God ahead of the religious leaders.

The problem wasn’t that God was giving some people more grace than others. The problem was that some people had filled themselves so completely with their own importance that there was little room left for God.

We look at the tax collectors and prostitutes who recognised their need for God, St. Augustine’s honest prayer, and ultimately Christ himself, who “emptied himself” and took the form of a slave.

Perhaps the question isn’t whether God is giving us enough grace, but whether we have made enough room to receive it.

  • Ep 105 - First In, Last Paid?

What happens when the person who arrives at 5pm gets paid the same as the person who worked all day?

In Episode 105 of Brother from Another Father, we explore Jesus' surprising parable of the workers in the vineyard and the uncomfortable question of whether God's generosity is really “fair.”

What if our relationship with God isn't about earning more because we worked harder or prayed longer? What if God's grace is not a wage to be earned, but a gift freely given?

Perhaps the real challenge is not understanding God's generosity, but learning to rejoice when someone else receives it too.

God bless, and have a good Sunday.

In this episode of Brother from Another Father, Fr Isaac reflects on Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant and the radical freedom that comes with forgiveness.

The kingdom of God is described as a world of mercy, generosity and release—but that flow can be blocked when we refuse to forgive. Our grudges and bitterness don't only affect us; they can affect the entire community around us.

Fr Isaac invites us to ask: Where have I closed the valve of forgiveness in my own life? And what would happen if I opened it again and allowed God's grace to flow freely?

God bless, and have a good Sunday.

In Episode 103 of Brother from Another Father, Fr Isaac explores Jesus’ challenging teaching on conflict resolution within the Christian community. Why do we so often avoid difficult conversations, choosing anonymous complaints or silence instead? Drawing from the Gospel, Fr Isaac looks at the importance of confronting wrongdoing with love, involving others when necessary, and ultimately seeking reconciliation rather than division.

A reflection on courage, community, accountability and becoming instruments of reconciliation in a world increasingly marked by conflict.
