Can Minecraft help young people connect more deeply with nature, with one another—and with parts of themselves that traditional learning spaces sometimes fail to reach?

In the second episode of Bridging Worlds, Nathan Walker is joined by Dr Tracy Hayes and developer Dr Adam Hart to explore what happens when outdoor learning, youth work and digital creativity are brought together.

At the heart of the conversation is an innovative project connecting experiences at Poole Farm with the creative possibilities of Minecraft. The episode examines how familiar digital environments can open new routes into participation, communication and belonging—particularly for neurodivergent young people who may experience conventional educational and community spaces differently.

Rather than positioning screen-based activity and the natural world as opposites, Nathan, Tracy and Adam consider how each can enrich the other. Outdoor experiences can inspire imagination and creativity within Minecraft, while digital play can give young people new ways to express ideas, build relationships, solve problems and make sense of their encounters with nature.

The discussion also moves beyond the theory. The team reflect honestly on the practical realities of the project, the unexpected learning emerging from the young people involved, and the importance of creating experiences that are flexible, inclusive and genuinely shaped by participants rather than simply designed for them.

This episode invites listeners to reconsider what meaningful engagement can look like—and to imagine what becomes possible when we stop asking young people to choose between physical and digital worlds.

Essential listening for youth and community workers, teachers, researchers, parents and anyone interested in inclusive practice, neurodiversity, outdoor learning or the creative potential of technology.
