Toyota and Honda dominate the hybrid sedan conversation, but Hyundai took a different route with the 2026 Sonata Hybrid.

Instead of an eCVT-style hybrid system, the Sonata Hybrid uses a six speed automatic, real shift events, and a more mechanical driving feel. The result is a hybrid sedan that avoids the worst full throttle drone of some rivals, but also asks the driver to accept more audible EV-to-gas transitions, more noticeable brake blending, and a less seamless overall experience.

In this review, I’m looking at the 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid from the driver’s seat. Powertrain feel, transmission behaviour, brake calibration, steering, ride quality, ergonomics, owner reported issues, and whether the Sonata Hybrid makes sense against the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid.

The question is simple: is avoiding the blender noise worth giving up some smoothness and a few MPG?

Honda refreshed the 2026 Pilot with a list of upgrades you can confirm in a parked car at the dealer. Bigger touchscreen, bigger gauge cluster, Google built in, a quieter cabin. One item on that list needs a road to judge, and Honda put it near the bottom. A week in the $56,490 Black Edition and the update nobody can photograph is the one that changed the car.

The 2026 Honda Pilot Black Edition AWD is the flagship of Honda's 3-row crossover range, priced at $54,995 MSRP or $56,490 with the $1,495 destination charge, against $42,195 for the Pilot Sport 2WD where the range starts. The 2026 refresh brings a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Google built in, and a quieter cabin, while the 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 carries over unchanged at 285 hp and 262 lb-ft through a 10-speed automatic and Honda's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. EPA ratings are 19 city / 25 highway / 21 combined mpg. This review covers the retuned electric power steering that Honda listed near the bottom of the press kit, on-center weight and highway tracking, brake pedal feel and modulation, body control and ride quality on the Black Edition's 20-inch wheels and 255/50 R20 tires, the 10-speed's manual-mode behavior, seating position and ergonomics, the push-button shifter, third-row and cargo practicality, plus owner intel from Pilot owners on ventilated seats, wireless charging, the 1-2 upshift, and real-world fuel economy. The last Countryman I reviewed weighed 3,777 pounds and spent the whole episode hiding them. This electric SE weighs 4,588 and hides nothing. It drops 811 extra pounds into the floor, which by every rule I know should make it worse to drive.

The 2027 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 is the electric Countryman, and this is a driver's review of what 811 extra pounds of battery do to the way it drives. Two electric motors, one per axle, make 308 horsepower and 364 lb-ft, with 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds and a 216-mile EPA range that holds up in summer and falls hard in winter. DC charging tops out at 130 kW. The story is the chassis: the gas Countryman S ALL4 carries 57% of its weight over the nose, while the SE sits at nearly 50/50 because the battery lives in the floor, and that low center of gravity is why the heavier car is the more composed one through a corner. This review covers the electric ALL4 setup versus the gas car's clutch-based rear-torque system, the ride penalty from conventional dampers instead of Dynamic Damper Control, the circular OLED screen, the manually adjustable sport seats, cargo space, and what real owners on the forums and subreddits report about winter range, DC charging behavior, OS 9 software, and a low-speed shudder traced to a front motor sensor.
