The Trees That Disobeyed | Rashi, Rav Kook & the Taste of the Journey (Parshat Bereishit)
Q: God asked for a tree whose bark tastes like its fruit. The earth gave us a tree that only makes fruit.
Therefore: Rashi says the ground was cursed for it, together with Adam.
In this episode we follow one tiny missing word in Bereishit 1:11 through Chazal and the meforshim.
We go from:
- The earth on trial -to - the Or HaChaim's three trees.
- From the Maharal's "split between tree and fruit"-
- To Rav Kook's teaching that the path itself was meant to be as sweet as the goal.
Then we find the one tree that obeyed:
The Etrog.
Why are we lazy?
Not because we don't want the goal,
but because the path tastes like wood.
Teshuvah gives the bark its flavor back.
