Getting on the Forbes 400 this year? You need a cool $4.4 billion—up from $3.5 billion last year and way more than a decade ago. AI, data centers, and soaring stocks are fueling the boom, while nearly 600 American billionaires still miss the cut. The 400 are sitting on $8 trillion combined—up from $6.6 trillion last year. Elon Musk tops the list with net worth nearly doubled thanks to SpaceX’s IPO, followed by Jeff Bezos and Larry Page. In Massachusetts, Abigail Johnson leads with over $40 billion at Fidelity. Some past stars like Phillip T. Ragon and Alan Trefler have fallen off—the game keeps changing. Forbes calculates net worth by crunching every asset: stocks, real estate, company stakes. It’s a jaw-dropping snapshot of who’s winning in today’s economy—and how wealth is concentrated at the very top.

Massachusetts is leading a coalition of states in a bold legal fight against a new federal rule that threatens to cut off Medicaid and CHIP funding for gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Attorney General Andrea Campbell calls the mandate an overreach that harms low-income minors and undermines state authority over healthcare. As providers consider halting hormone treatments and puberty blockers under federal pressure, activists are pushing for stronger action—some even staging protests and sit-ins, with nine arrested—while Campbell insists litigation is the most effective way to protect care and encourage providers to resume services.

Three hikers from Massachusetts got stranded on New Hampshire trails over Labor Day weekend, sparking separate rescue ops — one woman injured on Mount Monadnock, another man critically hurt on Mount Osceola with head, neck, and limb injuries. Aerial support from the National Guard saved the man’s life, avoiding a grueling ground carryout, as winds threatened the helicopter’s landing. These dramatic rescues underscore the risks of hiking during busy weekends and the lifesaving work of dedicated rescue teams.
