- On January 15, 1991 at 7:14 AM, meter reader Brenda Peterson found two leather work boots side by side on the pond with heels together and toes pointed toward the center of the ice.
- There were no footprints leading to or away from the boots despite eight inches of snow having fallen the previous weekend and the nearest road being 400 feet away through the trees.
- Deputies arrived at 8:40 AM, photographed the scene, bagged the boots and objects, and the case sat in a miscellaneous folder for six weeks before being noticed.
- The 1991 evidence bag contained a pair of dark brown leather work boots, a folded square of burlap, and six smooth river stones arranged in two parallel rows of three.
- Nettie Kowalski, a 31-year-old widowed mill worker who came from Poland, was found sitting upright on the ice on January 9, 1922; the inquest recorded cause of death as exposure and filed the case under weather incident.
