🏆 Does your athlete actually come to you when things get hard?

Most parents think they have an open relationship with their kid. Most athletes tell a different story.

Here are 5 things every sports parent needs to hear:

🚪 Keep the door open — Your athlete needs to know they can come to you. Especially when things fall apart.

💪 Focus on effort, not outcome — Wins and losses aren't always up to them. Effort, preparation, attitude, and response always are.

🎯 This isn't your journey — It's theirs. Let them own it.

🤝 Use sports to build the relationship — The benching, the bad games, the injuries — that's where the real coaching happens.

🏁 One day, the uniform gets hung up — The scoreboard fades. The lessons and the relationship don't.

Don't waste the hard moments. Sports will hand you everything you need to teach your athlete how to work, fail, recover, and push through.

    🏈🏀⚾🥎🏐🤼‍♂️⚽

You're not just raising an athlete. You're raising an adult.

👉 Ask yourself: When things get hard, will my athlete come to you — or shut you out?

What does it take to go from a small town in Colorado to state wrestling champion, Army tanker in Desert Storm, and Sheriff of Logan County?
Brett Powell grew up in Rangely, Colorado. Population small. Competition fierce. And the lessons he learned on the football field and wrestling mat shaped everything that came after — the military, law enforcement, leadership.
In this episode of Small Town Legends, Randy Elam sits down with Brett to talk about what coaches actually said that got through to him, what today's athletes are missing, what parents need to stop doing, and why heart beats talent every single time.
If you're a high school athlete trying to find your edge, a parent who wants to understand what your kid actually needs, or a coach looking to build something that lasts — this conversation is for you.
    What you'll hear:

    How a halftime speech turned a 6-0 deficit into a 36-6 win
The week Brett ran stairs alone before winning state — because his practice partner was sick
Why his dad barely came to games, and what happened when he did
What a 135-pound drill sergeant taught a 220-pound soldier about respect
Brett's message to parents: "You had your time. It's their time to shine."
