Following on from my last episode about the film The Great White Hype, I thought it was worth having a bonus episode to look at the concept of Great White Hopes in boxing. Where does that term come from and what the impact was? Which fighters in history were given that label? Is it still in use?
Joining me for this discussion is Charles Farrell. He will be a familiar name to regular listeners to this podcast and my other podcast, Desert Island Fights.
Even if you are not particularly interested in boxing, hopefully this cultural and historical background will be of interest.
Charles has two books out that I would highly recommend -
The Legend of Mitch "Blood" Green and Other Boxing Essays, which you can buy here and (Low)life: A Memoir of Jazz, Fight-Fixing, and the Mob, which you can buy here.
You can also find all of my writing at my website which is Steve Hunt Boxing
You can order my book, Heavyweight Title Fights of the 1980s, from Amazon
You can also follow me on Twitter or Instagram
I hope you enjoy the show. You can contact me via my website. I'd love to hear from you.
