Idaho fourth graders have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shine: win a statewide essay contest and get to light the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree in D.C. in 2026. Sponsored by Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, the contest invites kids to write about why Idaho’s forests and clean water matter — with the theme “Over the Rivers and Through the Woods.” Essays must be 350–500 words, original, no AI help, and require parental consent. Winners will fly to Washington with three family members, stay at a hotel, get food money, and read their essay aloud during the tree-lighting ceremony. Plus, they might get invited to local Idaho events and have their name and image used in the program. Deadline: September 30, 2026.

Thieves are hijacking Kia and Hyundai cars with old-school key ignitions—no actual key needed. This isn’t isolated; multiple towns report stolen vehicles, often the same ones seen earlier that day. Owners are panicked, especially parents worried about safety, with one even considering trading in her car. The fix? Kia offers a free software update or a physical ignition lock—check eligibility via VIN. Meanwhile, people are turning to steering wheel locks and better parking habits as extra layers of protection.

Idaho’s fiscal year 2028 budget is shaping up to be lean and cautious, as agencies are urged to submit only essential requests after years of cuts and limited revenue growth. Governor’s budget chief Lori Wolff emphasized maintaining current spending levels rather than restoring previous reductions, with Medicaid, prisons, and public schools already absorbing most of the projected funds. The only pending request comes from the state’s largest agency, Health and Welfare, expected to be posted soon. With the governor’s proposal typically unveiled in January, lawmakers will soon begin reviewing these requests to finalize the state’s funding blueprint for the coming year.

Idaho is on the brink of becoming the nation’s largest radioactive waste dump, potentially hosting a third of all spent nuclear fuel under a secretive federal deal quietly signed by Governor Little. While officials tout job creation and manufacturing growth, key details remain hidden. The state has a painful history with nuclear waste—past governors like Cecil Andrus and Phil Batt fiercely resisted becoming a permanent dumping ground, even securing agreements to limit waste and set removal deadlines. Now, new pressures loom: potential conflicts of interest tied to Trump’s nuclear investments, rising military reactor spending, and global nuclear tech sharing. Idaho must choose between short-term economic promises and its long-standing environmental safeguards—its future hangs in the balance.

Diesel hits an all-time high in Idaho at $5.94 a gallon—matching the national average—as gas climbs to $4.72, fueled by global chaos: U.S. military strikes on Iranian tankers after Iran’s attempted attack on a Navy ship and Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities sent oil prices soaring past $100 a barrel for the first time in six weeks. Markets remain jittery, and experts aren’t sure how long these sky-high fuel prices will last.
