Today’s episode is a replay of an older interview I recorded in August 2024 with Toni Meachum, one of the attorneys representing the King Ranch and the King family in Central Washington.

This conversation looks at ranching, land stewardship, water rights, state power, and the fight over one family’s cattle operation. We start with the difference between ranching and farming, why succession planning can make or break generational ranches, and why ranchers think in terms of stewardship instead of exit plans.

From there, we get into the King Ranch case, including allegations from Washington’s Department of Ecology and Department of Natural Resources, disputed alkali wetland claims, man-made stock ponds, DNR lease cancellations, and the legal pressure facing the family at the time of the recording.

Toni walks through the civil, administrative, and criminal pieces of the case, including the Environmental Protection Division, the use of an organized crime statute, the subpoena of a King Ranch employee, due process concerns, and the later pivot toward cultural resource claims.
