  • Becoming in Motherhood: A Conversation on Matrescence with Yodit Kifle Smith
    2025/05/17

Motherhood changes us and not just physically, it's a whole biological transformation. As our bodies and our brains change, it shifts how we see ourselves, the world, and even our faith. But often, we don’t have language for that change.

In this powerful episode of Birthing in Faith, I’m joined by Yodit Kifle Smith, a mom, writer, minister, and the heart behind MamasPrayTalkCare and Called to the Ones. We're diving into the concept of matrescence - the gradual unfolding that creates a new version of you in motherhood.

Yodit shares how her personal journey through motherhood led her to discover deeper layers of calling, surrender, and faith. We also talk about how her ministries create safe spaces for mothers to process, pray, and feel seen in the middle of the often-unspoken emotional shifts that come with parenting.

What We Cover in This Episode:

✨ What matrescence means and why it matters
✨ The beauty and complexity of becoming in motherhood
✨ How MamasTalkPrayCare supports mothers in every stage of the journey
✨ The mission of Called to the Ones and how God uses motherhood to refine us
✨ Encouragement for anyone who feels like they’ve “lost” themselves in motherhood

Whether you’re a new mom, deep in the postpartum trenches, or a woman just beginning to explore what motherhood might mean for you... this conversation will remind you that you are still becoming, and you are still called.

  • Let's Talk Doulas: An Essential Part of Your Birth Team
    2025/04/24

When you hear the word doula, what comes to mind? A hype woman? A birth guide? Just another person in the room?

The truth is, doulas play a powerful role in the birth space, but there’s still so much misunderstanding about what they do, and how to find the right fit for your birth team. As a labor and delivery nurse, I’ve seen the difference a great doula can make. But I’ve also seen the tension that can happen when doulas and providers aren’t working together.

In this episode of Birthing in Faith, I’m sharing an honest conversation about:
What doulas actually do (and what they don’t)
Why doulas are especially valuable for Black women and families
The red flags to look out for when choosing a doula
How to find the right doula for YOUR vision and values
Why we need a real shift in how doulas are integrated into the birth team

This isn’t about choosing between your provider and a doula, it’s about building a team that respects you, sees you, and knows how to work together to support you fully.

  • Monday Mindset: Why Rest is Holy
    2025/03/31

Ever feel like if you don’t take control, everything will fall apart? That “if it’s going to be, it’s up to me” mindset might feel empowering at first, but over time, it leads to exhaustion, stress, resentment and feeling like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. But I wanna let you know - Jesus didn't die for that!

In this episode, we’re talking about:

Why rest is holy: not just something you earn after working yourself to the ground
Why we, as Black women, need to rest: who are often expected to be strong no matter what
How to release control: in practical and spiritual ways

Motherhood, birth, and life in general come with too many unknowns, and that's exactly why you CAN'T do it all alone. Let’s talk about what it looks like to move forward in faith without the burnout.

If this episode speaks to you, subscribe and share it with someone who needs this reminder!
