Mary receives a visit from the angel Gabriel, who breaks the news to her that she is going to become pregnant and give birth to God’s son, who will become God’s king.

Mary is naturally shocked at this revelation, wondering how this will be. The angel’s reply is simple but profound: ‘Nothing is impossible with God.’

Paul is talking here about two particular things that canrob our joy in Jesus: dis-unity and anxiety. First, he addresses a pastoral situation in Philippi church, urging the people involved to set aside their differences and unite in the Lord. Then he explains that the answer to our many anxieties is to bring them to the Lord in prayer.

In this section, Paul wants to be really clear on how we get right with God: not through our good works, or our religious heritage, or in keeping God’s law… No, says Paul, the only way to get right with God is by the salvation that comes by faith in Jesus Christ. It’s why Paul puts his relationship with Jesus ahead of everything else: he wants to know Jesus better.
