In this episode of The Next Lesson, we wrap up our Back 2 School series with a conversation about assessments, not just the scores, but what those scores actually tell us about our children.

Assessment data can help identify what a child has mastered, where additional support may be needed, whether meaningful growth is happening, and when a student may need more challenge. But here’s the takeaway:

A score should never become a label. It should become the beginning of a conversation.

And remember, good grades don’t always tell the entire story. Classroom grades and assessment data measure different things, which is why parents need to understand both.

Questions to Ask

If your child is below grade level:

* Which specific skills need improvement?

* What intervention is being provided?

* How often will progress be monitored?

* What can we do at home?

* When will we review their growth again?

If your child is on grade level:

* What skills has my child mastered?

* What skills are next?

* How will my child continue to be challenged?

* What enrichment opportunities are available?

* How will growth be measured?

If your child is above grade level:

* Is my child performing significantly above grade level?

* Should we consider gifted and talented screening?

* How will instruction be differentiated?

* What advanced or enrichment opportunities are available?

* What’s the plan to ensure continued academic growth?

Every child deserves growth—not just students who are struggling.

Parent Back Pack Check™

Before you zip up that backpack this week, ask yourself:

✓ Do I know which assessments my child will take?✓ Do I know when they’re given?✓ Do I know what the scores actually measure?✓ Do I know how the school uses the data?✓ Do I know how my child will be challenged—or supported—because of the results?

Beyond the Score

When that assessment report comes home, don’t just look at the number.

Ask about the story behind the score.

What does my child know? Where are they growing? Where do they need support? What happens next?

The goal isn’t collecting data. The goal is helping every child grow.
