You’ve built something solid. A business. A reputation. A life that looks the part. But somewhere along the way, something started feeling off. Not broken. Not a crisis. Just… not right. Maybe the drinking has become more of a habit than you'd like to admit. Maybe the marriage is stable but not exactly alive. Maybe you're still driven, but the fire feels different. You're functioning at a high level — and wondering why that still isn't enough. Beyond the Gray explores the gray areas of life that successful people rarely talk about — including gray area drinking, midlife identity shifts, relationships, faith, health, and purpose. Host Kari Schwear, founder of GrayTonic, helps business owners, leaders, and high-achievers understand what’s driving their habits, reconnect with what actually matters, and lead their lives with the same intention they bring to their work. This isn’t a sobriety podcast. And there are no labels here. Just clarity, honesty, and conversations most people are too busy performing to have. While many of Kari’s clients are men over 50 navigating these transitions, the ideas explored here resonate with anyone ready to move beyond the gray. New episodes every Tuesday.© 2026 Kari Schwear 個人的成功 心理学 心理学・心の健康 自己啓発 衛生・健康的な生活

  • Decision Fatigue: Why You’re Exhausted From Making the Same Decision Over and Over | Ep. 32
    2026/09/22

Decision Fatigue is EXHAUSTING! Let's talk about it, shall we?

“Am I going to drink tonight?”

    “Maybe I won’t.”

    “Well, maybe just one.”

    “I’ve had a rough day.”

    “I’ll start tomorrow.”

    Sound familiar?

What if the thing exhausting you isn't the decision itself? What if it's making the same decision over and over again?

In this episode of Beyond the Gray, Kari Schwear explores what happens when we get stuck negotiating with ourselves about something we already know needs to change.

And while alcohol is one of the clearest examples, this isn't just about drinking.

We do this with our health. Our marriages. Our businesses. Our boundaries. Our habits. The conversations we keep avoiding.

Sometimes we aren't actually confused about what we want. We know. We just don't want to make the decision because we know the decision means something.

Kari shares two conversations that sparked this episode, her own experience of making a decision about drinking and no longer having to revisit it every day, and why there can be tremendous freedom in finally making a decision once.

She also breaks down the difference between taking a 30- or 60-day break and using that time to genuinely explore your relationship with alcohol versus simply counting down until you can go back.

And then there's the bigger question:

What decision are you tired of making?

    In this episode, you'll hear:

    • Why repeatedly making the same decision can be more exhausting than the decision itself
    • What decision fatigue can look like in real life
    • Why high performers and busy leaders can spend so much mental energy negotiating with themselves
    • How alcohol can become an automatic part of your day, until you decide you want something different
    • The difference between taking a break and simply counting down until you can drink again
    • Kari's personal story of making the decision to stop drinking and what changed when the decision became non-negotiable
    • How the same pattern shows up in your health, marriage, business, and relationships
    • Why you may be negotiating with an old version of yourself
    • How the DECIDE Method can help you move from uncertainty to clarity and action
    • What you might gain when you stop focusing only on what you're giving up
    • The one question Kari wants you to sit with this week

    Your question for this week:

What decision am I tired of making?

    Write it down.

Don't solve it. Don't judge it.

    Just name it.

    Then ask yourself:

What would my life look like if I stopped negotiating with myself about this?

You don't have to fix your whole life today.

But there may be one decision you've been making over and over again that you're finally ready to make once.

Maybe that's where your freedom starts.

  • Why You Keep Failing at Change: It’s Not About Willpower | Ep. 31 (formerly Ep.3)
    2026/09/15

What if the reason you keep struggling to change isn’t a lack of discipline, motivation, or willpower?

    What if it’s your identity?

This is one of my favorite episodes from the early days of Beyond the Gray, and it’s worth bringing back because this conversation goes way beyond alcohol.

We all carry stories about who we are:

    “I’m not a morning person.”

    “I’m just not disciplined.”

    “I have a sweet tooth.”

“I need a drink to unwind.”

    “I’m not a gym person.”

“This is just how I am.”

The problem is that when we repeat those stories long enough, they start to feel like facts. And once a belief becomes part of your identity, your behavior tends to follow it.

In this episode, we’re talking about why identity drives behavior, why changing a habit without changing your self-concept often doesn’t stick, and how you can intentionally begin becoming the person you actually want to be.

Yes, this applies to drinking. But it also applies to your health, marriage, relationships, leadership, faith, discipline, energy, and the way you want to live the next 10, 20, or 30 years of your life.

Because the real question isn’t just:

“What do I want to change?”

    It’s:

    “Who am I becoming?”

I also walk you through my DECIDE methodology and explain why identity comes before daily habits and execution. And I’ll give you a simple exercise you can do this week to start closing the gap between who you are today and who you want to become.

You are not stuck with the version of you that got you here.

    You are allowed to evolve.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why willpower isn’t the real answer to lasting change
    • How your identity is formed through repeated thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors
    • The danger of saying, “This is just what I do”
    • Why behavior change without identity change often doesn’t last
    • What happened when wine became part of my own identity
    • Why changing can feel scary even when you know you want something different
    • The connection between identity, habits, and behavior
    • How to start defining the future version of yourself
    • How the DECIDE method helps you create meaningful change
    • A simple exercise to identify who you're becoming and what that person does today

    Your challenge this week

    Complete this sentence:

“Five or ten years from now, I am a man/woman who ______.”

    Be specific.

    Then ask yourself:

“What does that person do today?”

That gap between who you say you want to become and what you're doing today is where your work begins.

If this episode makes you question something deeper about your life, your habits, your drinking, or the person you're becoming, let's talk.

  • Why Taking a Break From Alcohol Never Works (And What Actually Does) | Ep. 30
    2026/09/08

You took 30 days off. Then 60. Then 90. You proved you could do it. And then you went right back. Six months later, you're in the same place, asking yourself the same question: "Am I really ready to quit, or do I just need another break?"

In Episode 30 of Beyond the Gray, Kari Schwear tackles the cycle that keeps gray area drinkers stuck for years: the break game. Take a break, prove you're fine, go back, repeat. She breaks down the real data on relapse rates (40-60% in year one, dropping to just 7% after year five), the psychology behind why your nervous system pulls you back, and why identity, not willpower, is the thing that actually makes sobriety stick. This episode draws the line between taking a break and making a commitment, and explains why that distinction is everything.

    In this episode you'll hear:

    • The exact cycle: weeks 1-2 feel great, weeks 6-8 you feel invincible, weeks 10-12 life hits and you go back

    • Real relapse data: 40-60% in year one, 21.4% in year two, 9.6% years 3-5, 7.2% after five years

    • Why commitment cuts the relapse rate in half

    • How your nervous system was trained by 30 years of drinking and why it reaches for what used to work

    • Why isolation, depression, and loneliness predict relapse more than any biological marker

    • The identity trap: you quit the behavior but kept the identity, so your identity pulled you back

    • "I'm the wine girl. I'm the business guy who closes deals over drinks." How drinking becomes who you are

    • What a "break" tells your nervous system vs. what "I'm done" tells it

    • The Prove It Challenge: what are you actually trying to prove?

    • The court of law exercise: would your reasons to keep drinking hold up under questioning?

    • Choice 1 (break) keeps the door open. Choice 2 (commit) closes it. You can't have both.

    • Why relapse rates for alcohol are similar to hypertension and asthma, this isn't a character flaw

If you've been cycling between breaks and relapses for months or years, this episode explains why. And it gives you the one shift that changes everything: from behavior change to identity change.
