  • She Learned to Braid on Corn Husks in Guinea
    2026/08/26

In the very first episode of Beyond the Braiding Chair, host Diena Diallo sits down with her longtime friend and client Julienna for a wide-ranging conversation about where her craft began. Diena grew up in Guinea, practicing her earliest braids on corn husk fibers and learning by watching a neighborhood elder named Grandma Houdia, long before she ever touched a paying client's hair.

From there, Diena traces her path to the United States, the true origin story behind the Fulani style, and thirty years building a career that has now served more than five thousand clients, including people navigating cancer, alopecia, and major life transitions. She talks openly about the concept of bio-individuality in Afro hair, why she treats every consultation as prevention rather than a formality, and the mistake early in her business that changed how she works with every client since.

The episode closes with Diena's reflections on creativity, legacy, and why she built Braidpedia Institute to pass her knowledge on to the next generation of braiders.

    In this episode:

    • Diena's first braid, done on her niece at age ten
    • Learning by observation from a neighborhood elder
    • The real story behind the Fulani style name
    • Bio-individuality and the biggest myth about Afro hair
    • How Diena assesses a new client's scalp and texture
    • Why women often change their hair during hard seasons of life
    • The link between diet, medication, and hair health
    • Building Braidpedia Institute as a way of giving back
