This is a podcast channel by the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation (the Award).

Here, the Award holders from across the globe will chat about self-development, career paths, leadership, wellbeing, volunteering, and, of course, the role the Award played in these areas of their lives.

About the Award

Delivered anywhere, by anyone who is passionate about helping young people to achieve, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global Non-formal Education and Learning (NFEL) framework for young people from all backgrounds and circumstances. By engaging them in experiential learning beyond the classroom, the Award provides the opportunity for 14 to 24-year-olds to challenge themselves, and develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities for life and work in a rapidly changing world.

Since its founding in 1956, it has grown to reach nearly 1.2 million young people annually in more than 130 countries and territories. Every day, 1,500 young people begin their Award journey, taking on everything from environmental restoration and campaigning for inclusion, to the discovery of new passions and career pathways. Their stories show that the Award is far more than numbers. It is defining experiences that enable individuals from every context to transform their lives and grow into confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged young adults that are #WorldReady.

  • The Foundation of Being World-Ready: Why Human Skills Are Built, Not Born
    2026/07/15

What skills will define the future?

Leadership, empathy, adaptability, and resilience are high on the list for today's young people.

To mark World Youth Skills Day, Martin Houghton-Brown, Secretary General of the International Award Foundation, sits down with us for a special podcast episode hosted by our Global Advocacy Manager Mariana Roa, to share how the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award creates opportunities for young people to develop these foundational #HumanSkills.

For 70 years, the Award has provided safe, supportive environments where young people gain real-life experiences, take on responsibility, learn from challenges, and celebrate achievement—building the confidence and capabilities they'll carry throughout life.

Today, these skills matter more than ever. As AI reshapes the world of work, while increasing digital interaction changes the way we build relationships, investing in human skills alongside formal education has never been more important.

  • The Power of Human Skills
    2026/05/11

In this episode, we explore human skills — communication, teamwork, empathy, creativity, and other so-called “soft skills” — that are proving just as essential as technical and professional knowledge in both everyday life and the workplace. Together with two experienced Award leaders, we discuss how to develop these skills, why they matter, and their impact on personal and professional growth.

This episode opens a wider conversation on human skills.
