  • How to Stay Safe While Travelling with Host Ryan Jeffrey and Guest Nano Stasiak
    2024/04/02

In today’s episode, we focus on some of the tips I recommend regarding safety while travelling abroad. As a bonus, I’m joined by 29-year-old entrepreneur, world traveler, and close friend, Nano Stasiak, who has much to share when it comes to safety recommendations in foreign countries. Having travelled to nearly 30 countries over the past 15 years, he has many stories and firsthand experiences to share.

Discussing some of the common anxieties that come with travelling to a foreign country, I highlight that the most common safety concern for travellers is associated with petty crime like pick pockets and street corner scams.

To ensure you are not a victim of these crimes, I recommend things like trying to show as much confidence as possible, keeping all your valuables in a secure spot, not dressing too extravagantly, and more.

We also cover the importance of keeping important documentation, cash, and finances safe, and share some tips on best practices to do so.

This episode is meant for both the experienced budget traveller who’s looking to be as safe as possible, as well as those just starting out.

Before I get into any of the nitty gritty, I start off by discussing some of the key differences between hostels and hotels. I look at differences in privacy and amenities, and how this effects the price point of each accommodation option.

After I discuss the differences between hostels and hotels, I dive into the things you should being looking for, as well as the things that should raise some red flags, when planning to book a stay at a hostel. From where you should look to find the best info and the overall security of the hostel, to its location and extra amenities and activities a hostel offers, I’ve got you covered.

I wrap up this week’s episode by touching on an alternative accommodation option that is perfect for the budget traveller… house sitting! • The Travel Basics with Host Ryan Jeffrey
    2024/03/11

In today’s episode, the first of many, we discuss some of the general tips and tricks I recommend to all when travelling on a budget.

Although travel trends and prices tend to change quite frequently, I start off by explaining some best practices to keep in mind when booking your flights. From how much you can save based on when you book to helpful resources you can use to track flight prices, I’ve got you covered.

    · 5% savings associated with booking your flight on a Thursday compared to a Tuesday (Expedia Study)

    · Save up to 10% when booking 6+ months in advance compared to 2 months or less (Expedia Study and Forbes)

    · Booking a flight for August is 20% cheaper when compared to flying in December (Expedia Study)

From here, we dive into the universal packing necessities for anyone travelling on a budget. I recommend specific products and packing techniques that’ll make your travels cheaper and less worrisome, things that will ultimately make for a better experience.

Being one of the sneakier expenses while travelling abroad, another set of tips and tricks I provide listeners with is how to save on food and meals while travelling. I cover everything from whom you should ask for local recommendations on where to eat to specifics surrounding how you can get around these costly expenses.

To wrap up the episode, I speak on the importance of having a well thought out plan before making any major travel decisions. In this section, I give an example of the cost of living in Switzerland, which is roughly $3000 a month, the fourth highest in the world (Arora, 2023), and how it is important to know things like this before booking your trip. Having a specific budget plan is something that will save you in the long run.
