The Dripping Faucet: The Power of Kind Words

Can a dripping faucet teach us something about nurturing children?

During a drought, when the grass was brown and dry, one small patch remained green and thriving. The secret? A dripping faucet that quietly and consistently provided the moisture it needed to survive.

In this episode of Before the First Bell Rings, Dr. Andrea Bussue reflects on how kind words, encouragement, and positive affirmations can nourish a child's spirit, just as those tiny drops of water sustained the grass.

Every encouraging word matters. Every expression of belief makes a difference. And sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness produce the greatest growth.

Keep dripping kindness. You never know whose life you are helping to blossom.

Encouraging hearts. Inspiring minds. Transforming schools.

  • The Toxic Work Environment
    2026/10/03

This week we learned of the incident that took place on FlyDubai. involving the captain and his co-pilot. Thousands of feet above the earth, an incident between two people who were supposed to be working together placed an entire aircraft in danger. A toxic workplace is damaging anywhere—but a cockpit at 36,000 feet makes the consequences impossible to ignore. In most workplaces, toxicity may show itself through undermining, hostility, sabotage, poor communication, resentment, or people refusing to work together. In a cockpit, where cooperation and trust are directly connected to safety, conflict can potentially affect everyone who has entrusted their lives to that team.

And if you are working in an environment that is difficult right now, guard your heart. Protect your peace. Establish appropriate boundaries. Do not allow somebody else's bitterness to change who you are.

  • Remembering The Mighty Sparrow: I Heard Him. I Sang Him. I Studied Him.
    2026/09/28

In this special edition of Before the First Bell Rings, Dr. Andrea A. Bussue pauses to remember The Mighty Sparrow—not simply as a calypso icon, but as a storyteller, social commentator and master of language whose music became part of her own journey from childhood to college and beyond.

Introduced to Sparrow's music by her mother, Andrea first heard and sang his calypsos as a child, long before she understood the satire, double entendre and social and political commentary beneath the lyrics.

Years later, while studying at the College of the Virgin Islands, now the University of the Virgin Islands, she chose calypso for an English research paper and began analyzing the music she had grown up hearing.

That experience changed the way she listened.

Sparrow was more than entertainment. His calypso was literature, social history and cultural commentary.

This deeply personal tribute follows a simple journey:

    I heard Sparrow.
    I sang Sparrow.
    I studied Sparrow.
    I understood Sparrow.
    And today, I remember Sparrow.

A reflection on memory, music, scholarship and the enduring cultural legacy of the Mighty Sparrow.

  • Lessons from the Seagrapes
    2026/09/21

    Lessons from the Seagrapes 🌿

Have you ever noticed that the seagrapes growing on the same cluster don't all ripen at the same time? Some are ready while others still need time—and there is nothing wrong with either one.

In this episode, Dr. Andrea Bussue draws a powerful lesson from nature for educators and parents: children develop, learn and flourish at different rates. Just because one child reaches a milestone before another does not mean the other child will not get there.

Our responsibility is not to rush the process, but to nurture, encourage and provide the conditions each child needs to grow.

Same cluster. Different timing. Every grape gets its opportunity to ripen.

  • Setting Boundaries Before The First Bell Rings
    2026/09/14

Set the Boundaries Before the Bell Rings

Strong classroom culture begins with clear expectations. Inspired by a magistrate's story about establishing order and respect from her very first day in court, Dr. Andrea Bussue reflects on why educators should set boundaries before problems arise. When expectations are clear, consistent and modeled from the beginning, students know where they stand—and everyone is better positioned to succeed.
