  • Massachusetts Ballot 2024 Q3 [BMOB Bonus Episode]
    2024/10/21

Question 3 on the Massachusetts ballot this November 5 would force individual contractors to form a union, join it if 2-1/2 percent of drivers approve, pay dues, and work under terms & conditions determined by the state Secretary of Labor.

Likely to be hurt the most are women—especially moms of school-age children—retirees looking for part-time schedules, specialists in 790 occupations, entrepreneurs, workers who moonlight, and anyone who loses their job suddenly.

Under long-established federal anti-trust law, independent contractors cannot collude and set prices to customers.

This question brings total governmental control of pay and working conditions to one large sector of the Massachusetts economy. It lowers the threshhold for unionization to a trace percentage of affected workers (2-1/2 %), and introduces sectoral bargaining to state law.

The chapter-length document is 7,315 words long and contains sentences as long as 291 words.

It's a giant step to Massachusetts outlawing independent contracting, threatening 76 million Americans.
