On October 22, 2026, Bartholomew marked 35 years as Ecumenical Patriarch while the Patriarchate remained institutionally weak in Istanbul, with no Orthodox seminaries under its own control there. A $3 million Georgetown endowment for an Orthodox chaplaincy highlighted the contrast. ⛪️💰
The central tension is that a global Orthodox presence has expanded through diplomacy, universities and diaspora giving, even as the Patriarchate lacks the domestic legal and educational base many assume it has. Prestige has grown, but jurisdiction has not.
The Georgetown gift from the Psaros family created the university’s first endowed Orthodox chaplaincy, giving students a permanent pastoral presence. In Istanbul, Halki Seminary has stayed closed since 1971, leaving the Patriarchate reliant on a worldwide pool of clergy, schools and benefactors.
What remains unresolved is whether Bartholomew’s model of primacy can bring durable change in Turkey or only influence abroad, and whether Orthodox unity can survive disputes like Ukraine and the lack of a final court of appeal. TAKE ONE examines power without a state, the future of Halki, and who can define Orthodox authority.
