The story begins after Balder has been killed by the blind god Hoder, who unknowingly throws the fatal mistletoe given to him by Loki. The gods of Asgard are devastated by the loss. Refusing to accept Balder’s fate without a struggle, Odin sends Hermod on a dangerous journey to the realm of the dead to ask Hela to release him.
Hela agrees on one condition: every living thing must mourn Balder. The gods attempt to fulfill her demand, but Loki intervenes and ensures that the condition cannot be completed. Balder therefore remains among the dead, accepting his destiny while speaking of the greater destruction that will eventually come with Ragnarök.
Arnold presents the legend with a solemn, epic atmosphere, emphasizing mourning, sacrifice, inevitability, and the emotional bonds between gods and mortals. The poem is divided into three major movements—“Sending,” “Journey to the Dead,” and “Funeral”—which carry the reader from shock and hope toward resignation and farewell.
