Can a law firm's billing reports be completely accurate and still miss work that was performed?

In this episode of BackBillPro: Legal Billing, Technology & the Work Between, we explore why legal billing leakage has a measurement problem.

Discover the difference between unbilled time and legal work that never became a time entry, why accurate billing reports may still be incomplete, and how historical Gmail correspondence can help attorneys investigate potentially overlooked work.

We also explain where BackBillPro fits—and why attorney review remains essential before any proposed billing entry is approved.

An accurate report of incomplete records is still incomplete.

What happens when an attorney performs legal work, but that work never becomes a time entry?

Legal billing software can report unbilled time. Automated trackers can capture activities. But neither an unbilled-time report nor a timer can account for work that was never recorded in the first place.

In this episode of BackBillPro: Legal Billing, Technology & the Work Between, we examine the gap between work performed and work recorded.

We explore why attorneys lose track of billable activity, why billing reports cannot reveal every missing entry, and how historical client correspondence can help identify work that deserves a second look.

The central question: If legal work never entered the billing system, how would you know it was missing?

BackBillPro helps attorneys identify potentially unrecorded legal work in Gmail, prepare proposed billing entries, and review those entries before importing them into PracticePanther.

You did the work. The billing record didn't always follow.

If you charged the client a flat fee, finding another six minutes of work doesn't mean you should bill the client another six minutes.

So why bother finding it?

Because what the client owes you and what it cost your firm to do the work are two different questions.

If your billing system says a $3,000 matter took 12 hours, but you actually spent 16, you're making decisions about profitability, workload, and future pricing with incomplete information.

In this episode, BackBillPro creator Julia Stein looks at the work that disappears into email, why missing time still matters in a flat-fee practice, and why recovering work is not the same thing as deciding to bill it.

The point isn't to turn every recovered email into another charge.

It's to know what work you actually did.
