• 9. The Trigger Words That Build a Wall Between You and the Sale
    2026/09/27

Every low close rate has a root cause, and it's rarely the offer. It's reactance, the invisible wall that goes up the second an audience feels pushed instead of invited to decide for themselves. Most speakers never learn to recognize it happening in real time, which means they walk off stage blaming the room, the market, or the price point, when the real problem was four words they said fifteen minutes earlier.

In this episode, Amy Jo Honey and Joseph McElveen pull back the curtain on the specific language that triggers this response in seminar audiences. They break down why phrases borrowed from the hustle culture school of selling, things like "10X your business" or "no excuses," carry the residue of every speaker who's used them before and failed to deliver. You'll learn why the fix isn't finding fresher hype words. It's removing the reason the wall goes up at all.

They also go deep on FOG, fear, obligation, and guilt, and how this manipulative pattern shows up not just in sales rooms but in personal relationships. You'll hear exactly what FOG sounds like when someone uses it on you, and the one question that forces manipulation to explain itself out loud, which is often all it takes to make it collapse.

This episode is for speakers, coaches, salespeople, and anyone who's ever watched a room go cold and couldn't figure out why. If you've ever felt like you had to choose between being effective and being honest, this conversation will show you why that's a false choice.

Sales Tai Chi teaches that people hate being sold to, but they love buying. This episode is about the language standing between the two.

  • 8. You're Only Selling to 25% of the Room (And You Don't Even Know It)
    2026/09/20

Most rooms are only converting 25% of the people in them, and most sales teams don't even know it. In this episode, we break down the masculine vs feminine buying language split, why a "confident" script only lands with a quarter of the audience, and the timing mistake that's quietly capping close rates before the sales team ever shows up. If you've ever wondered why some rooms convert at 60% and others barely hit 30%, this is the episode that explains it.

  • 7. The Secret Weapon Top Closers Never Say Out Loud
    2026/09/12

Everyone's chasing the perfect line. The killer question. The one-liner that flips a "no" into a "yes." But if you've been in enough rooms, on enough calls, in front of enough prospects, you already know the truth: the best closers aren't winning with what they say. They're winning with what they don't.

In this episode, we break down why silence and pausing are the real behavior profiling tools nobody talks about in sales training. Most people treat reading a room as a talking skill, like the right words in the right order can engineer someone into buying. It can't. Real profiling is listening. It's watching what someone does with the space you give them, and most salespeople can't sit in three seconds of quiet without jumping in to rescue the discomfort. Every time they do, they lose the read, the real objection, and the truth.

We get into what a well-placed pause actually does: how it signals confidence, how it lets a prospect talk themselves into (or out of) something in their own words, and why that sticks harder than anything you could say for them. We also break down the different underlying motivations people walk into a sale with, whether they're driven by results, by helping others, by keeping the peace, or by connection and fun, and how to read and sell to each one without ever raising the pressure.

If you've ever felt like you're working too hard to close, or like you're talking your way out of deals you should be winning, this one's for you.

  • 6. Steal Our Room Setup: The Silent Close Multiplier
    2026/09/06

Most speakers obsess over their slides, their pitch, their close. Almost nobody thinks about the chairs.

In this episode of Back Of The Room Podcast, Amy Jo Honey and Joseph McElveen pull back the curtain on something most people in this industry never talk about: the physical setup of the room and how it quietly decides your close rate before you ever say a word.

Seating angles. Sightlines. Where the tables sit. Where the energy pools and where it drains. These aren't logistics, they're behavior triggers, and the room is either working with you or working against you.

Amy Jo and Joseph break down the exact setup they use on stage, why it matters more than most speakers realize, and how a few small adjustments can shift a lukewarm room into one that's leaning in and ready to buy.

Steal it. Use it. Watch what happens to your numbers.

  • 5. The Secret Ingredient Sitting In Your Negotiation Right Now
    2026/09/05

Covert Negotiations: The Secret Shopper Game Nobody Talks About

Most people only ever see a sales room from one seat, their own. They never get to sit in the audience and watch their own team work a crowd. They never get to see what the other side of a negotiation is really doing while they're focused on holding their own position. And they almost never get to feel what it's like sitting in the buyer's chair, watching someone else try to sell them.

We've spent decades sitting in all three seats. In this episode, Amy Jo Honey and Joseph McElveen pull back the curtain on covert tactics most of the seminar and sales industry never talks about publicly.

First, how companies hire outside eyes to secretly shop their own seminars, sitting in the audience like any other attendee, watching the sales team work the room in real time, and reporting back exactly how the team is actually performing instead of how leadership assumes they're performing.

Then, the part that surprises people most. How an "assistant" quietly sitting in your negotiation might actually be reading body language, tracking hesitation, and feeding you real-time signals through hand cues, all while the other side has no idea anyone in the room is watching that closely.

And finally, why some of the best closers in this business deliberately sit in someone else's audience as genuine shoppers, not to steal ideas, but to feel exactly where resistance rises and where connection breaks down when they're the one being sold to.

This episode is about what's really happening underneath the conversation in every room you walk into, and why the people who can see it stop getting caught off guard by it.

Whether you're a speaker, a coach, a closer, or someone who runs a sales team and has never really seen how your own room performs, this conversation will change how you look at your next meeting.

Everyone talks about closing techniques. Nobody talks about who's standing next to you when the close rate starts dropping. In this episode of Back Of The Room Podcast, Amy Jo Honey and Joseph McElveen pull back the curtain on one of the most overlooked reasons speakers and companies fall apart: the wrong partnerships. Not bad products. Not weak marketing. • 2. The Truth About Back Of The Room Sales Numbers
    2026/08/15

Most live event closers never break 10 percent. They've been told that's just how it is, and eventually they believe it. But what happens when someone shows up with a real number and it's too big to accept?

In this episode of Back Of The Room Podcast, Amy Jo Honey shares the story of a consultant who couldn't fathom a 60 percent close rate. In his mind, anything past 5 percent was fiction. So when Amy Jo told him her actual average, he didn't just doubt her, he refused to update his own belief about what was possible. He went back to his company still convinced it couldn't be true, and his numbers didn't go up. They collapsed all the way down to 2 percent, until he was let go. He got to be right, and it cost him everything.

Then the conversation goes deeper, into a story about watching a 200 million dollar company go bankrupt from the inside. The owner was a bully, the kind of leader nobody wanted to bring bad news to. So people stopped bringing it. He surrounded himself with yes men who agreed with him to stay off the chopping block, and he never got the truth until it was too late. It's a hard look at what ego does when it's left unchecked, not just to one person's sales numbers, but to an entire organization.

Amy Jo also pulls back the curtain on something most companies won't admit. Sales Tai Chi's real average close rate is 60 percent, but the number published on the website is 40. Not because it isn't true, but because 60 sounds like manipulation to people who've never seen anything past single digits. It's a window into how belief, ego, and identity shape what people are willing to accept as real, even when the truth is sitting right in front of them.

This episode is a reminder that your close rate, and honestly your whole business, will never outgrow your willingness to hear what's real.

Back Of The Room Podcast is hosted by Amy Jo Honey, founder of Sales Tai Chi, behavior profiler, and high ticket sales trainer, alongside co-host Joseph McElveen, who brings decades of experience from inside the seminar industry. Together they pull back the curtain on the seminar industry and talk about the conversations most people in this business won't have.
