1969, I was sixteen, handing out leaflets in Amsterdam to protest what was happening to the Indigenous people of the Amazon. They were being driven off their land. More than fifty years later, they're still fighting the same battle.
But there's something else we should be paying attention to. Something these people know that we seem to have forgotten.
What happens when we stop treating nature as something we own? When we think about the next seven generations instead of the next election? And what can Indigenous cultures teach us about the future of our planet?
In this episode of Back From The Future, I look at the Amazon, Indigenous knowledge, and the strange idea that a forest might have rights of its own.
Back From The Future is a podcast by Dutch author and journalist Fons Burger, looking back from the year 2125 at the world we're creating today.
