Last episode I promised that I’m back in my rotation for my 50th greatest albums and records of my lifetime. And I mentioned to you that there’s a “CHANGE” coming. (BEAT). Well this is it - this is the episode of my salute of ENTRY #22 in my podcast - and thats the music of the Italian and American R&B and Disco group known as - CHANGE.Change was an Italian-American post-disco group formed in Bologna, Italy, in 1979 by French-West Indian businessman and executive producer Jacques Fred Petrus and Italian musician and producer Mauro Malavasi. Petrus and Malavasi destablished Goody Music Productions and sought to create a studio project that blended European synthesizer aesthetics with the soulful, groove-driven sound of American R&B. The band's dual Italian and American identity was a result of a production system in which the music, excepting the vocals, were written and recorded by Italian famed sound engineer Maurizio Biancani over the Fonoprint Studios, Bologna, Italy. To achieve this, they utilized a stable of talented Italian studio musicians, including bassists Davide Romani and Paolo Gianolio, while importing top-tier American vocalists to record in New York and Milan. This unique cross-continental approach gave Change a distinct, sophisticated sound that bridged the gap between the waning disco era and the emerging 1980s R&B and dance music landscapes. The group's breakout release came in 1980 with their debut album, The Glow of Love. It was a massive critical and commercial success, largely driven by the masterful vocal performances of a then-unknown session singer named Luther Vandross. Vandross provided the lead vocals for the album's iconic title track and the smash hit "Searching," which propelled his own solo career to superstardom. Powerhouse vocalist Jocelyn Brown was also featured on the album, anchoring the hit "A Lover's Holiday." The Glow of Love dominated the US Billboard Club Play Singles chart, spending nine weeks at number one, effectively making it the top disco album of the year. Following their explosive debut, Change underwent several lineup adjustments while maintaining their signature sound. With Vandross pursuing a solo career, the group enlisted singers like James Robinson for their 1981 follow-up, Miracles. The band continued to release a string of successful albums throughout the early-to-mid 1980s, including Sharing Your Love (1982) and This Is Your Time (1983). By 1984, the group collaborated with former Time members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who produced the acclaimed Change of Heart album, scoring another major hit with the title track. After Turn on Your Radio in 1985, the group dissolved, following the tragic murder of founder Jacques Fred Petrus in 1987. Though they eventually reformed decades later, their foundational work between 1980 and 1985 remains their most influential legacy, leaving an indelible mark on post-disco, boogie, and modern dance music.OKAY, SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU SOME OF THE MAJOR TALKING POINTS OF THIS GROUP. AS I SAID EARLIER, I BELIEVE THAT CHANGE IS A GROUP THAT DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE TALKED ABOUT, REMEMBERED AND DISCUSSED IN R&B AND DANCE MUSIC BECAUSE THEY’VE GIVEN US SOME OF THE BEST MUSIC IN THE 80’S AND FOR ME, SOME OF THE BEST MUSIC OF A LIFETIME AND IT’S FOR THIS REASON THAT I WANT TO SALUTE THEM.
