Welcome back to the Restoring Balance Podcast, where Mike and Jim dive into Avatar: The Last Airbender! In this episode, the duo tackles "The Deserter", the sixteenth chapter of Book One, where Aang desperately seeks a firebending teacher, discovers a legendary master living in hiding, and learns a painful lesson about the cost of impatience.
Warning: This podcast contains spoilers, jokes, and insights about Episode 16 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Watch it first!
Episode Highlights
Foreshadowing in Plain Sight: Mike and Jim open by marveling at how the show plants seeds through the wanted posters in town. The poster of Jeong Jeong goes unrecognized at first glance, and Jim recalls pausing the episode during a sick-day rewatch just to puzzle over the face.
A Flawed Teacher: The hosts dig into Jeong Jeong's characterization, praising both the writing and the voice acting. Mike and Jim note that his relationship with his last student, Zhao, has clearly broken something in him.
Roku's Cameo Changes Everything: One of the episode's pivotal moments comes when Roku briefly appears, and his presence is enough to completely reverse Jeong Jeong's refusal to teach Aang. Mike and Jim reflect on how this signals to the audience that the Avatar, when fully realized, carries a weight and authority that commands respect from even the most stubborn figures.
Aang Burns Katara: The scene where Aang accidentally burns Katara lands hard, and the hosts feel the weight of it. Sokka's reaction is intense and a little surprising, but Mike empathizes with it, understanding how protective instincts can override everything in a moment of panic.
Firebending Comes from the Breath: The hosts share the idea that firebending has been fundamentally corrupted by the Fire Nation, which has replaced its true source with anger and aggression. They note that this broken philosophy sets up Zuko's entire Season 3 journey.
The Avatar as Living Library: Mike wonders aloud what a fully realized Avatar could do if they actually tapped into all that accumulated memory. Jim teases that viewers of Korra might know something Mike doesn't.
Zhao's Ego Destroys His Own Boat: Aang goads Zhao into attacking so recklessly that he blows up his own ship. The hosts draw a callback to Iroh's proverb from the Waterbending Scroll episode about being so busy fighting you don't notice your own ship has sailed.
Katara Unlocks Healing : Katara spontaneously discovers her healing ability while treating her burns. Mike and Jim both wish this moment had been given a few more seconds of screen time, calling it a bit abrupt. But the real comedy gold is Sokka's reaction: Jim relates, noting he would be furious too.
