What happens when the life that once defined you no longer exists—and you're left asking who you are underneath all of it?
For more than two decades, Summer built a successful career within the structure of the federal government. Behind that highly analytical and regulated world, however, was another part of her life she kept much quieter: her intuition.
Then life began asking her to listen differently.
In this deeply personal Spotlight conversation, Summer joins Nichole L Haywood and Tina Akowitz to share the experiences that shaped her spiritual awakening, her relationship with intuition, and eventually the creation of Just Be True.
Summer takes us back to a pivotal moment in her 30s when she began hearing voices she couldn't explain. Afraid she was “going crazy,” she scheduled an appointment with a medium. Before Summer could explain what had been happening, the medium told her the very thing she desperately needed to hear: “You're not crazy.” That moment became a light switch, allowing experiences from much earlier in Summer's life to suddenly make sense. One of those experiences takes this conversation somewhere especially vulnerable.
Summer shares the story of sitting outside her apartment years earlier and repeatedly hearing a warning telling her not to go inside. She questioned it, reasoned with it, and ultimately entered her apartment—where she encountered an armed attacker and survived a violent assault. But Summer's story isn't simply about developing spiritual gifts.
It's about learning to trust herself.
It's about what happens when an identity you've spent decades building disappears.
It's about missing the structure, authority, financial security, and familiarity of an old life while simultaneously knowing you're being called toward something different.
And it's about realizing that transformation doesn't always happen overnight.
After being laid off from her 22-year federal career in 2025, Summer found herself navigating exactly that space. She speaks candidly about the freedom that came with the transition—and the very human reality that followed: missing her salary, her structure, her role and the people who once came to her for answers.
