  • Ian Cockbain - Why Every Athlete Needs a Financial Plan Before They Retire
    2026/07/28

We are joined by former Gloucestershire cricketer Ian Cockbain, whose story highlights one of the most overlooked aspects of athlete transition, financial preparation.

Ian spent 12 seasons as a professional cricketer, representing Gloucestershire, Welsh Fire and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, while also playing franchise cricket in Australia and Pakistan. He built a successful career through consistency, resilience and adaptability, becoming one of Gloucestershire's most respected white-ball players.

Unlike many athletes, Ian had a clear idea of what he wanted to do after cricket. Following in his late father's footsteps, he knew he wanted to become a financial adviser. But while he had a destination in mind, he didn't know exactly when his playing career would end.

When the moment arrived, Ian was able to accelerate his transition because he had prepared. He had time to study, to qualify, and to build a career without the pressure of immediately replacing his sporting income.

Today, Ian helps professional athletes take control of their financial future, ensuring they are not only prepared for retirement but able to make decisions from a position of strength rather than necessity.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Why Ian felt fortunate to have a clear vision for life after cricket
    • The reality of a "forced retirement"
    • Why he needed a clean break between elite sport and studying
    • How financial preparation allowed him to spend two years retraining without an income
    • Why so few athletes receive meaningful financial education during their careers
    • The difference between earning good money and building financial security
    • Why talking about money shouldn't be a taboo subject in elite sport
    • How athletes can create a financial safety net before retirement arrives
    • How financial freedom creates career freedom after sport

  • George Garrett - Identity, Preparation & Finding Your Next Chapter Beyond Sport
    2026/07/14

What happens when the thing you've dedicated your entire life to is no longer the thing that defines you? For many elite athletes, transition arrives as one of the biggest challenges they will ever face.

In this episode of Athlete to Athlete: Lessons for Life Beyond the Game, we are joined by former first-class cricketer George Garrett, who opens up about his journey from professional cricket to his next chapter in law.

George's cricket journey began through the Warwickshire pathway, progressing from age-group cricket to making his first-class debut before representing both Warwickshire and Kent at senior level. A talented fast bowler, George experienced the highs and challenges of professional sport, understanding the relentless pursuit of performance, selection and opportunity. But in September 2025, George made the decision to retire from professional cricket and begin training as a lawyer.

In this honest conversation, George shares the reality of identity loss, why athletes often struggle to communicate their value outside sport, and why preparation before transition arrives is one of the greatest advantages an athlete can create.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Why George chose to retire from professional cricket on his own terms

    • Why being introduced as a “former athlete” can impact confidence and credibility

    • How studying helped George create options beyond cricket

    • Why athletes struggle to communicate their value professionally

    • Why LinkedIn and professional networking can feel uncomfortable for elite athletes

    • The importance of gaining work experience before transition arrives

    • Why athletes should explore different industries as a process of elimination

    • How preparation creates confidence when the next chapter begins

  • Bo Wullings - Reinvention, Relationships & Finding Your Next Goal
    2026/06/30

What happens when the goal you've chased for years is no longer there? For many athletes, that question arrives suddenly.

For former Dutch international rower Bo Wullings, it became an opportunity to explore something many athletes struggle with: who they are beyond performance.

Bo's journey is unique, he began as a competitive swimmer, earning the opportunity to study psychology in the United States while pursuing his sporting ambitions. When swimming didn't take him where he ultimately hoped, he didn't walk away from sport, he reinvented himself, transitioning into rowing, Bo rose through the Dutch system to represent TeamNL on the international stage, competing at World Cups, European Championships and World Championships.

While many athletes wait until retirement to think about what comes next, Bo was already investing in himself through education, relationships, curiosity and conversations.

Today, as founder of PX Base and a performance psychologist, he helps leaders, teams and organisations create environments where high performance and wellbeing can coexist.

In this episode, Bo shares why networking changed the trajectory of his career, why curiosity is one of the most powerful traits athletes can develop, and why finding your next goal may be one of the most important challenges you'll ever face.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Why reinvention is one of the most powerful skills athletes possess
    • How a career in swimming ultimately led to international rowing
    • The importance of building relationships long before you need them
    • Why networking is simply curiosity in action
    • How conversations opened every professional opportunity after sport
    • The challenge of finding a new goal after elite competition
    • Why athletes need to find their people and community beyond sport
    • The role education played in creating options and opportunities
    • How performance, wellbeing and fulfilment can coexist
