- Wayne left Radio Island marina on Saturday, February 15 at 7:40 AM and sent informal GPS coordinates that were only stored in a dockhand Phil Oats's text messages.
- His distress beacon was transmitting but reported a position 12 miles away from his actual location, directing search planes to the wrong area for days.
- Weeks after the rescue, the four-inch signal mirror was found on the roof of an electrical substation in Harkers Landing, 200 yards from Bogue Sound, behind a locked chain-link fence with no footprints or clear explanation.
