In Luke 14, Jesus walks into a Pharisee's home and immediately challenges everything about how they understand God, honor, and community. He heals a sick man on the Sabbath, exposes the pride of guests scrambling for the best seats, and tells the host that his guest list reveals his values. Through the parable of the great banquet, Jesus warns that those who assume they belong may be the very ones who miss the kingdom entirely. The people no one expected end up filling the room, while the original invitees make excuses and stay away. The kingdom of God does not operate on reciprocity. It operates on grace. We are called to build tables that welcome the wounded, the overlooked, and the forgotten, not because they can repay us, but because that is exactly what God's table looks like.
