Mark 14:1-11 is one of the most layered passages in the Gospels, weaving together a plot, a dinner, an act of extravagant worship, and a betrayal. Jesus chooses to dine at the home of Simon the Leper, a man still defined by his past even after his healing, and in doing so restores his dignity and declares that no old label has the final word. In the middle of that same dinner, an unnamed woman breaks an alabaster jar of expensive perfume and pours it over Jesus as an act of devoted worship. While others call it waste, Jesus calls it beautiful and promises that her story will be told wherever the Gospel is preached. Moments later, Judas leaves that same table to betray Jesus for silver. This passage is a mirror for all of us, because every one of us comes to the table carrying something, whether old wounds, divided hearts, or gifts we are afraid to offer. Jesus does not wait for a perfect setting. He sits at complicated, messy, broken tables, and His presence there changes everything.
