  • The Biggest Estate Planning Mistake Most Families Make
    2026/07/22

Most people think having a will means their estate plan is complete. Unfortunately, that's one of the biggest misconceptions in estate planning. In this episode of At the Bar with the Chandlers, Douglas and Britt Chandler explain why a will alone isn't enough to protect your family. They discuss what happens when someone becomes incapacitated, why probate can be costly, time-consuming, and public, and the essential legal documents that every adult should have in place.

The conversation also explores what truly makes an estate plan effective: protecting your family's future, preserving your values, and creating a lasting legacy. Douglas shares a personal story about losing his mother and how a simple voicemail became more valuable than any inheritance, inspiring one of the firm's most meaningful planning services.

Whether you're just getting started or already have a will, this episode will help you understand what comprehensive estate planning really looks like and why planning is about much more than what happens after you're gone.

    In this episode you'll learn:

👉 Why a will alone may not protect your family

👉 The hidden costs and realities of probate

👉 The importance of powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and HIPAA authorizations

👉 What every parent of an adult child should know

👉 How business owners should incorporate their business into an estate plan

  • Meet The Chandlers & Why We're Starting a Podcast
    2026/07/15

Twenty-seven years inside the legal system taught me one thing: the problems that destroy careers and fracture families almost never have to happen.

I’m Douglas Chandler. I’m the founder of Chandler Law in Alpharetta, Georgia. I got into this work because I spent the first half of my career suing lawyers for malpractice and litigating professional liability cases.

What I kept finding, over and over, was that the thing that blew the whole situation up was almost always preventable. A cleaner document. A harder conversation. A few extra steps nobody took.

Then those same lawyers (the ones I’d been suing) started coming back to hire me to defend them. Against malpractice claims. Against disciplinary complaints. Against ethics investigations. And I took that seriously, because they’d seen how I think.

But I also know this from the other side. I’ve hired estate planning attorneys for my own family. Twice. And both times, I walked out with a binder, a handshake, and almost no confidence that anything would actually work when it needed to. I know what it feels like to sit in that chair. That’s part of why this show exists.

My wife Britt has spent thirty years as a nurse practitioner working in high-risk, high-stakes clinical environments. Together, we sit down in our home bar (think Irish pub, think cozy, think the conversation you actually want to be having) and we talk through the real issues that affect law firm owners and business professionals across Georgia.

Follow us on LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook because the best time to have this conversation is before you need to.
