  • The Sun Enters Capricorn Twice

    Your horoscope says Capricorn begins on December 22nd. The stars say January 14th. Both are right — and the gap between them has been widening for seventeen centuries.


    This episode is about two different ways of pointing at the same sky, and what happens when one of them is quietly moving.


    The tropical zodiac starts counting from the March equinox, so it's locked to the seasons — exactly what you want if you're deciding when to plant a crop. The sidereal zodiac starts from a fixed star, so it's locked to the actual constellations — what you want if you're asking where the Sun really is tonight. Neither is a mistake. But Earth's axis wobbles, dragging the equinox slowly backwards through the stars, and the two systems come apart.


    Hipparchus caught that drift around 130 BCE, with naked eyes and century-old records. Here's the part that stops you: in the roughly 2,150 years since he discovered the equinox moves, it has moved 29.98 degrees. A zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide. The thing he caught in the act has slipped almost exactly one full sign since he noticed it.


    We find the single moment the two systems agreed — 285 CE, when they were nineteen minutes apart — then watch them separate century by century, until the Sun's entry into Capricorn has walked from December 20th to January 14th. It's still moving, about a day every 72 years.


    Then it gets concrete. Take the seven bright stars that draw the shape of Capricornus, convert their catalogue positions, and every one of them falls inside sidereal Capricorn. Not one falls inside tropical Capricorn. On New Year's Day 2026, while Western astrology calls it Capricorn, the Sun sits less than two degrees from Nunki — a star of Sagittarius.


    This is not a "your star sign is wrong" episode. Nothing here is wrong. The two systems are separated by exactly one number, and you can convert between them perfectly in either direction; they're no more rival theories than Celsius and Fahrenheit. What they genuinely disagree about is which question deserves the zero point — the seasons, or the stars. That's a choice about purpose, not a dispute about fact.


    Also along the way: why India settled its sidereal reference by government committee in the 1950s; how a rounded-off constant in that decree produced a 16-arcsecond "bug" that turned out never to have existed; why there is no single sidereal zero, with competing definitions differing by about two degrees, so "the stars say January 14th" really means give or take a couple of days; and why constellation boundaries — only made official in 1930 — are a shakier footing for this argument than most people assume.
