  • Aruch HaShulchan Yomi — OC 321:23–31 | Soft Mix, Hard Craft
    2026/07/30
Soft mix, hard craft — lash, skinning, scoring, and the salt shaker.

    Thursday, July 30, 2026 · 16 Av 5786
Official portion: Aruch HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 321:23–31

How far does kneading go in the mustard jar and the horseradish bowl? When is a soft finger-mix enough of a shinui? Then the Aruch HaShulchan pivots to skinning, tanning, scoring lines — and whether salting food is “tanning dinner” or just looking like pickling.

Key takeaway: Lash is gentle binding for now. Me’abed and sirtut are lasting craft. The salt shaker is judged by seasoning a bite versus building a preserve.

  • Aruch HaShulchan Yomi — 8-Day Catch-Up Review | OC 319:33–321:22
    2026/07/30
From Borer’s last cases to the door of Lash — eight missed days in one kitchen map.

    Catch-up for July 22–29, 2026 · 8–15 Av 5786
Portion: Aruch HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 319:33–321:22

We close siman 319’s last borer cases (the fly in the cup, pouring off dregs, skimming fat), cross all of siman 320 on sechita — squeezing fruit, ice, and cloth — then open siman 321 with tochen (grinding) and the doorway of lash (kneading).

Key takeaway: Borer ends with common-sense eating/drinking. Sechita splits juice-pressing from laundry-wringing. Tochen asks “for the plate now or prep later?” Lash asks “binding the weekday way, or light and different for right now?”

  • Aruch HaShulchan Yomi — OC 319:26–32: If You Can Drink It, You May Strain It!
    2026/07/22
We close out our tour of hilchos borer with the laws of winnowing, water-sorting, and — the star of the show — straining liquids on Shabbos. Can you blow the chaff off wheat kernels? Can you let a sieve do the work for you? Why is straining red wine through a cloth fine, while clear water is a laundering problem? And what do you do about the fly that just landed in your iced tea? Plus: the Aruch HaShulchan takes on the Rambam over an explicit Gemara — lomdus in action!

    What we learn today:
    • Se'if 26 — winnowing chaff: one hand or your mouth only, never a sieve
    • Se'if 27 — no water tricks to float or sink the waste
    • Se'if 28 — no straining dregs in a meshameres on Shabbos
    • Se'if 29 — the golden standard: drinkable as-is means straining is permitted; watch for melaben, gumma, and ohel
    • Se'if 30 — the Rambam forbids the meshameres entirely
    • Se'if 31 — the Aruch HaShulchan pushes back with an explicit Gemara (Shabbos 139b)
    • Se'if 32 — pickle brine, almond milk, and yes — the fly in your drink
